Shadow Walker: Killian & Karyn's Story by C.J. Ayers
BOOK 1: Killian & Karyn’s Story

Karyn Rourke works hard as an ER nurse and doesn’t really have time for much of a personal life. She spends her free time watching the Travel Channel and dreaming about a life that she’ll never really have.

When a huge creature crashes into the hospital wreaking havoc and killing patients and several of Karyn’s coworkers, two men from the Kansas City branch of Department 99 show up to capture the creature and restore order.

Killian Marshall is a dark-mannered agent in the local field office of the Department 99. He’s a hard-as-nails tough guy, and virtually fearless. He has very few memories about his life before being a member of the organization. The memories that he does have come in the form of dream-like flash backs that haunt him. He doesn’t think that he was a good guy at all.

When Killian and his partner arrive on the scene, he is stunned to find a beautiful blonde standing face to face with the monster he came to take down. This nurse is unlike any human woman he has ever met. Killian has never been attracted to a human, but this one is fascinating. Her bravery and commitment to helping others in the face of a terrifyingly dangerous ordeal stirs something inside of him.

Up until this evening, Karyn was completely unaware of the existence of werewolves, healers, or any other type of supernatural creature. Now, here she is, smack dab in the middle of some sort of alternate reality. What’s more, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the sexy hero who took down a monster before her very eyes.
The only thing is, the sexy hero is a vampire.

DEPARTMENT 99
It’s hard to get a grasp of exactly what has been happening in the world, but with all of the “new versions” of beings appearing, it has become increasingly important to deal with certain issues. This is where the Department comes in. The organization exists under different names and in many countries throughout the world, all working toward the common goal of policing, monitoring, and keeping the world safe. In the U.S.A., it’s called Department 99.
Most people are unable to see the existence of the supernatural. No one knows why, but there are a few who can. Theories exist, including the idea that this phenomenon might have been occurring longer than previously thought, and those with the sight are descendants of these beings. Regardless, they can see through the natural haze that surrounds humans when they are confronted by the supernatural.
It is easy to convince just about anyone that a supernatural occurrence is something else (a task of Department 99). Most people return to their daily lives accepting the Department’s cover story. Most, it turns out, are very good at lying to themselves.
There are those, however who remain unconvinced - those who only see truth. In such cases, it is the Department’s task to have them brought into the fold and their mental strength tested through a process called re-alignment before revealing the truth in its entirety.
Unfortunately, the re-alignment process isn’t often something that goes well. It seems asylums are becoming overcrowded with people who can’t comprehend the truth as it is laid out before them.
