Emily abruptly turned to fire-haired Maggie, the beauty she blamed for stealing the man she'd marked to marry when she grew up. After Margaret had roped Roy the woman had insisted on sending ranch-bred, horse-loving Emily off to a Philadelphia finishing school, to "rid her of horrid vulgarian manners."

"Well blast and dang," Emily poker-faced, "I didn't keep my arm tucked close to my side, and I showed more than an inch of ankle when I crawled out from under that desk." She slapped a hand to her forehead in dramatic fashion. "Shucks! I also violated the first rule of public conduct: A lady does not draw attention to herself by shooting bank robbers."

She slanted a wry grin at Margaret. "I guess Miss Dinklenberg's "Good Form" class didn't trail break me after all."

"Heck Em, forget Miss Dinklenberg! You shot all proper-like." Roy looked into Emily's sparkling eyes. "Pretty miss, who taught you to shoot so sharp?"

Emily beamed. "Aw, one of them Eastons. You know. The homely-lookin' one."

ABOUT THE SERIES

Long ago John Easton brought his bride to the western territory. There he made his fortune in a copper mining partnership, and he used the mining profits to purchase a ranch. After John was killed, his sons, Cal and Roy, took over running the operation. John's wife suffered a stroke shortly after his death, and while caring for her the Easton men adopted two trail-orphaned sisters, Sarah and Emily Anders. The Easton Hearts series is the story of this second generation. It tells the unique tale of how Cal and Roy built a family amidst the hardships of post-Civil War Montana.
