This first book features Bernice, the eldest of the four girls. Even though it’s been a glorious summer in the countryside, she can’t seem to enjoy it. She’s so busy managing all the household chores, helping with her father’s dairy farm, and tutoring her youngest sister with her schoolwork.

She must now also help her father to get ready to sell their cheeses at a big market and her strength is failing. The only source of joy in her life is the young man, Abel, whom she is courting, but even time with him is limited and she’s concerned that their relationship may be in jeopardy. Although her father is kind and loving, she feels stuck and that life has been unfair to her.

A new neighbor moves into the community, quickly becoming a friend to the family and tries to help Bernice to see a different perspective.
