Tom, the eldest, doesn’t believe he’ll ever love again. He married a wonderful girl named Jane seven years ago, but she died in the process of giving birth to their first child, a little girl named Susan. Tom has been utterly lost ever since. He works on the family farm while his sisters have been taking turns to help care for the Burkholder home since his mother’s arthritic hands make it difficult for her to do much work.
Even though his daughter is now a six-year-old, Tom simply can’t face the idea of remarriage. But as Susie’s birthday and the anniversary of his wife’s passing grow ever nearer, Tom knows he must find closure once and for all if he’s going to pursue his love for Mary.
However, a frightful incident involving Susie occurs right after school one day, and when Tom hears about it, he’s deeply upset and angry at Mary. It’s now been weeks since Tom and Mary have spoken to each other. Will Tom and Mary ever find reconciliation? What will need to happen?
