A gambler plying a Mississippi River boats flees New Orleans before a morning duel. Russ heads west into Texas. Riding shotgun on an overcrowded stagecoach, his luck runs hot, defending the coach through three attempted robberies.
Fleeing San Antonio, Russ heads north where his luck runs cold. Stranded in the Comancheria, Russ spends the next four years learning about life from an ancient and exiled Comanche warrior.

At the head waters of the Llano, his luck runs out. Russ is prisoner to the band of Comanche warriors that killed his mentor. He learns another war is over. Soldiers returning to Texas are making life hard on those warriors. Tiring of their prisoner, they bury Russ to his neck and continue west, into the depths of the Llano.

Two days later, a small Ranger patrol rescues Russ. Days later, Russ returns to his broken wagon to recover the gold he buried before meeting the old Comanche warrior. In town Russ meets Jarod Walsh, special envoy to the governor of Texas.

Everything in Russ’ past has brought him to this point. Which path will he take? Revenge, flee, or stand to make something of himself?
