The Range Rider: The Scribblers: A Eighth Western Adventure by Mike Mackessy
The eighth adventure in a great Mountain Man series from Mike Mackessy!

Young Winfield, the nephew of the publisher of the New York News, heads west on assignment. He is an aspiring writer. His genre will become known as The Penny Dreadful or dime novels. Under the supervision of an old mountain man, Gabe, he sets out for Texas. Along the way he writes about everything, sending the stories to New York for inclusion in the newspaper.

On a stagecoach from Port Lavaca to San Antonio, the pair meet the famous Ranger Rider, Jarod Walsh. Reaching sort of a gentleman’s agreement, the two parties agree to travel together. Jarod shows young Winfield the side of the West perfect for his work, with one caveat—Jarod must read and approve each article.

Through typical experiences, normal to Jarod but eye-opening to Winfield, they make their way to San Antonio. From there they travel overland to the Devil’s River and Jarod’s ranch. Along the way Winfield recounts their meetings, the shootouts, and the desperados plaguing the West. At the end of their trip, the young eyes of Winfield discover the outlaw’s relay station catering to remounting bandits on fresh horses.

Having made the discovery, will Jarod allow Winfield and Gabe to accompany him while shutting down these relay stations? We may find out in the next missive.
