Miriam Troyer is seventeen and in love, although she has never told her parents about her desire to marry the boy next door. She has known him all her life, and her older sister has already married his older brother. Although she knows that they would likely approve of their courtship and eventual marriage, she is afraid to voice her thoughts until she knows that he feels the same.

However, his mother is sick and tragedy awaits his family, and she understands that now may not be the right time to approach him about his feelings. Instead she waits, and is shocked to discover that he may have intentions toward someone else entirely—the daughter of the nurse who comes to take care of his mother. She begins to wonder whether she has read him wrong for all these years.

She looked up and prayed quickly.

Isaac Miller has always led a comfortable life, secure among his family members and knowing his place in the world around him. However, giving birth to his youngest brother has brought about many changes for Isaac’s mother, and her sickness begins to prove too much for the Miller family to handle. When a hospice nurse is called upon to tend to her, everything in his life begins to change, and he wonders if he’ll ever have time to make known his intentions regarding the love of his life, Miriam.

The nurse’s daughter, unaware of the Amish customs that he holds so dear, takes many liberties in his presence, and it immediately causes a rift to form between him and Miriam. In his mind, he wonders if this will end any chance that he ever has with his beautiful young neighbor and he turns to God for guidance. It is ungentlemanly to deal with the young English woman the way he wants to, but at the same time he fears that irreparable damage is being done to his reputation within the small Amish community.

How will Miriam cope with the relationship between Isaac and the English girl?
